Searching for Nguyen Quynh Nga

This page is created by students and friends of the poet
and Professor Nguyen Huy Hoang to help search for his missing daughter, Nguyen Quynh Nga.

Letter of request

“My name is Nguyen Huy Hoang. I am now living in Moscow, Russia.

On 1st August 1993, my daughter Nguyen Quynh Nga, who was 12 years old then, unfortunately went missing in Sochi, Russia.

My family have been looking for Nga all over Russia and around the world ever since.

We have used various ways to attain information about her.

Sadly, to this very day, we have not heard anything from Quynh Nga. My students and friends helped me to create this website, Searching for Nguyen Quynh Nga, which features her virtual face aging images to help see what she might look like today considering the fact that she has undoubtedly changed a lot in nearly three decades. This website will be presented in different languages in order to expand the search range.

I am sincerely grateful to my students and friends for helping me create this website. Their great support and resources have encouraged me and my family to keep believing and looking for Quynh Nga. We hope that the Vietnamese community and people in Russia as well as around the world will be lending us a hand in search of our daughter – Nguyen Quynh Nga.

As a father who has been relentlessly searching for his missing daughter for nearly one third of a century, I earnestly ask anyone who visits this website to share it with others. Please contact us immediately if you have any information about Nguyen Quynh Nga.

Thank you very much and God bless you.”

THE SHARE OF TEACHER NGUYEN HUY HOANG

"If we decide to stay, we must be willing to face what life throws at us.” I used to work as a clerk for a Vietnamese company. The income was not enough for us to get by, so I had to earn extra money as a writer. Since I was a researcher at Moscow State University, my family and I were provided with small accommodation in a student dormitory. However, shortly after that, we had to move out. We then rented a small apartment and struggled to make ends meet. While we worked extremely hard to cover rent fees, groceries and other utilities, we never stopped searching for our daughter, Nguyen Quynh Nga. We tried our best, prayed all the time and searched for her wherever we could go to. I have long accepted this challenge and endured so many bitter things that pen and paper would be unable to describe. I could only cling to a faint ray of hope and chose to surrender to the mercy of fate then.

“It’s already cold in the early September rain

The wind changes direction, changing the direction of the trees

Then the ice will cover the empty river

Where in Russia are you?…”

The journey to find children!

To my daughter

“My sweetheart, nothing could ever describe how heartbroken I have been throughout all these years, especially at family holidays, ever since you went missing.

Whenever I see photos of my friends’ families, my heart aches and I can’t sleep all night. I have never stopped thinking about you and your current situation. I’m scared that you are now somewhere, suffering and all alone, and that nobody would care about you if you are sick or in trouble.

When you suddenly went missing, there were neither mobile phones nor the Internet, and Russia then was not a safe country. I don’t know where you are now. Do you have a mobile phone or the Internet there?

Are you able to use them? I have been to many places and met many people.

If I heard something about you, I immediately rushed there. I wrote about you and had it published in newspapers. I came to some programs to talk about your sudden disappearance. I did everything, but to no avail.

Whenever I look at your photos, they always evoke beautiful memories of you and I can’t hold back my tears. During these painful years, we have chosen not to celebrate our birthdays or any other holidays just because we couldn’t do it without you.

Your mom and I are still living in Russia. So much has changed in the last 30 years. I have now gone grey. At night, I sometimes imagine how you look now. I’m sure that no matter how much you have changed, your features would be the same as they remain in my memory.

No matter how arduous this journey is, your mom and I continue to wait and believe that you would one day come back to us.
I want you to be strong, full of will and faith to overcome all kinds of difficulties and obstacles. Please don’t lose hope and we will be together soon.

We pray that you are safe, healthy, happy and there are good people around you now. I can’t wait to hug you again one day.”
